Chemical Compatibility ASTM D543

Evaluating the Resistance of Plastics to Chemical Reagents is a critical test in the plastics industry, aimed at simulating the performance of plastic materials in various end-use environments. The test measures the plastic material's resistance to chemical reagents that it may come into contact with in its actual use, including foods, lubricants, cleaning agents, inks, and more. The test also accounts for changes in weight, appearance, dimensions, and strength properties that may result from the exposure to these chemical agents.

To conduct the test, at least 5 specimens of the material are tested under different chemical reagents, time periods, and strain conditions. The specimens can be weighed and measured before exposure to the chemical reagent. To simulate end-use stress in the test samples, strain jigs designed for ASTM izod bars or ASTM Type I tensile bars are used. Depending on the type of contact anticipated for the test sample, exposure to the chemical agent could be through immersion, wipe, spray, or saturated gauze. The test samples are then sealed in a container, and either left at room temperature or placed in an oven.

After the agreed-upon time period, the specimens are removed and evaluated for desired properties such as change in weight, appearance, or tensile properties, as compared to controls. The most common physical strength properties evaluated are tensile strength and elongation.

The specimens' size can vary, depending on the agreement of those concerned, and may include tensile bars, disks, flex bars, and more. Reports generated from the test often include visual evidence of decomposition, swelling, clouding, crazing, cracking, and/or changes in physical properties such as tensile strength and elongation.

In our opinion, the ASTM D543 test is a critical evaluation of plastic materials for their resistance to chemical reagents. It aims to simulate the performance of plastic materials in potential end-use environments and provides essential information for manufacturers, regulators, and end-users. The results of this test are critical in ensuring that plastic materials meet the required quality standards and are suitable for their intended use.
