Relative Density of Liquid Admixtures
Determining Relative Density of Liquid Admixture: Test Procedure
In the field of construction, liquid admixtures play a significant role in enhancing the properties of concrete. These admixtures are commonly used to improve the workability, durability, and strength of concrete. To ensure the quality and consistency of admixtures, it is crucial to determine their relative density accurately. In this article, we will discuss the test procedure for determining the relative density of liquid admixture.
Reference Standards
The test procedure for determining the relative density of liquid admixture is specified in IS : 9103-1999 – Concrete admixtures specification.
Equipment and Apparatus
The following equipment and apparatus are required for the test procedure:
Constant temperature bath
Measuring cylinder (500 ml)
Procedure
The test procedure for determining the relative density of liquid admixture involves the following steps:
Take about 400 ml of the admixture and pour it into a 500 ml graduated cylinder.
Place the hydrometer in the cylinder and allow it to reach equilibrium.
Once the hydrometer has reached equilibrium, take the reading at the bottom of the meniscus for transparent liquids or where the meniscus merges with the stem of the hydrometer for opaque liquids.
Record the reading as the relative density of the liquid admixture.
Reports
The result of the test should be reported to the nearest whole number.
Safety and Precautions
The following safety measures and precautions should be taken during the test procedure:
Use hand gloves and apron while conducting the test.
Clean the equipment thoroughly before and after testing to avoid any contamination.
Wear safety shoes to prevent any injury.
Conclusion
The test procedure for determining the relative density of liquid admixture is a crucial step in ensuring the quality and consistency of concrete admixtures. By following the reference standards and taking the necessary safety precautions, one can obtain accurate results and ensure the effectiveness of the admixture.
